ZIG ZAG – Update

Plans are well advanced for Zig Zag as bands are being booked, the workshops sorted, the equipment ordered and the sound engineer is on standby. There will be plenty of room for the artists to how their work (and sell it) as we are having a marquee for the art show instead of putting it round the pathway. There will be film and photography in the caves. The drumming workshops will be back. Headlock asked if they could appear again and there will be friends old and new on stage. The Andy’s are making this the best gig ever but they will need your help to make it a success. Would anyone be a volunteer marshal, help with putting up the gazebos and tents, manning the lost child point and a million other tasks that need doing. Please get in touch if you have any queries or if you can help. The date for your diary:-

Saturday 28th August in the amphitheatre.

Art on the Leas Railings

For the fourth time Shepway art groups gathered on the Leas to show their work on the railings in an exhibition hosted by Folkestone Artists Collective and supported by Shepway District Council and the Leas Cliff Hall. The day was a great success with little wind and not a cloud in sight. There was plenty of work, paintings, prints, photographs, jewellery and sculpture for all to see and a number of people made sales or received commissions. The public got the chance to meet and talk to the artists and everyone seemed to enjoy it. We were joined for the first time by the choir from Imagination Theatre School who entertained us with a wide range of songs from the bandstand. They have been invited to perform at Zig Zag so look out for them. We were unfortunate in that we coincided with a certain football match so by 3 o’clock the Leas was empty except for a few stalwart artists as everyone had vanished to sit in front of the nearest TV. If the football was disappointing the exhibition was not so, hopefully, we will be invited back again. Remember we need twice as many art groups and artists to appear for the Triennial year. A huge thank you goes to Amanda and Beverley at Shepway District Council, Stephen at the Leas Cliff Hall for all their help with the paperwork and organisation and Folkestone Town Council for allowing us to use the bandstand.

See you there next year.

Leas Railings Open Air Art Exhibition

Folkestone Art Society Spring Exhibition

The Folkestone Art Society Spring Exhibition opens on Wednesday 19th May, showcasing a selection of fine artworks created by its members, at The Grand on The Leas, Folkestone CT20 2XL.

The exhibition opening times are 10am to 6pm each day until May 31st. The Spring Exhibition usually has approximately 250 paintings and works of art on view and the majority of the work is for sale. The exhibition is rightly considered an important event in the arts calendar of the south-east and our previous exhibitions have drawn praise for the high standard of work exhibited.

Visitors are asked to vote for their favourite work of art and prizes, supported by Patron Robert Benson, will be presented to the winning artists.

Introduced at the Spring Exhibition in 2006 was a separate competition for paintings or drawings which was generously supported by Patron Michael Stainer of The Grand. This was so successful that there is to be a new 'Grand Competition' for members. The theme for this Spring's competition is to be 'With Flying Colours'. The competition will be on show in the Palm Court Restaurant.

Newsletter April 2010

The FAC has been through a long, cold, hard winter and emerged this spring with a new name, a new look, a new committee and plenty of new ideas. The FAC will be holding some new events as well as old favourites and we will keep you up to date through the newsletter. Due to busy commitments Wendy has stepped down as chair but remains an active member of the FAC. Kamilla has bravely taken on the role and is already discussing events and activities with the council and other groups. James has decided not to continue as Music Director but will continue to offer support and advice. Many thanks to both Wendy and James for everything they have done and we look forward to seeing them at events this summer.

Membership

Yvonne has recently sent out the membership forms. We have introduced some changes that we hope everyone will appreciate. First the membership fee has gone DOWN to £15...good value for money. Family and Junior membership is a new idea and hopefully will encourage the next generation of creative people in Folkestone. Please get your forms and fees to Yvonne as soon as possible.

Our Logo

Quite a few people put forward ideas for the new logo making it a difficult task for the committee to decide on one. We will be looking at them all at the next committee meeting and make a final decision then. Many thanks to everyone who put their ideas forward, they were excellent.
