Name: Stanley Whitehouse

Biography: Stanley James Whitehouse

I received my early art education in wartime Birmingham being very fortunate due to a teacher shortage, to be taught by an accomplished 'impressionist art master, called back from retirement.

Ten years later, married with three daughters and living in Leicestershire, I met a professional artist - Don Brown - who taught me to paint in oils. He helped me with my technique, composition and understanding of the medium. Under Don's wing, I exhibited and sold all I managed to complete. Since then, I have steadily, if not prolifically, produced oil paintings whilst moving around the UK and Europe with my job.

In 1999, I took an access course at Portsmouth University studying art and design. My intention was to update my skills and technique and found this time immensley rewarding. I also discovered an ability to help my younger colleagues who were struggling with thier drawing skills.

Prior to my latest removal to Folkestone to join the 'Creative Foundation', I enjoyed several successful seasons in Norfolk, recording the life of the local fisherman, thier boats, local scenery and holidaymakers relaxing etc.

I am now begining to sell in the Folkestone are following recent exhibitions and membership of local art groups. Currently, I have work on view in several Folkestone venues, as well as Penzance ,Cornwall.

Meeting people for the first time, I am often asked to describe my paintings. I like to work in oils and acrylics in the impressionistic style. I am attracted to marine subjects and my lifelong interest in steam railways.

I take my inspiration from Corot, Monet, Sickert, Pissaro, Sisley, Hammershoi and Edward Hopper. All my work and prints are always signed with my first two names, 'Stanley James'.
